For Muscular, Joint and Body Wellbeing
The JCU Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Clinic provides services to the community as well as staff and students of JCU. Clients are treated by JCU physiotherapy students in their 3rd and 4th years of the Physiotherapy Program.
The supervising Clinical Educators are fully qualified Physiotherapists and are present at all times during client assessment to supervise and guide students in their treatment of clients.
The JCU Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Clinic is committed to providing high quality musculoskeletal physiotherapy services to all its clients. The physio clinic is a training facility incorporating up to date methods for treating all musculoskeletal conditions.

- Neck and back pain
- Chronic lower back conditions
- Arthritis conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

- Before and after orthopaedic surgery
- Upper and lower limb injuries and conditions

What Can You Expect From The JCU Physiotherapy Clinic?
Physiotherapists are health professionals who are trained to assess and treat the underlying causes of conditions altering the movement of the body. Physio students are trained to provide:
- Quality assessment, treatment and client education including self-management strategies for your condition
- At the first assessment a plan that can collaboratively address the management of your condition.
Rachel Pappas
Physiotherapy Clinic Manager
Rachel Pappas is a graduate of James Cook University. She has a special interest in the area of musculoskeletal and women’s health physiotherapy. In addition to being the physiotherapy clinic manager, Rachel is responsible for undergraduate physiotherapy subjects in her position as lecturer at James Cook University.
Alex Beere
Physiotherapist and Clinical Educator
Alex Beere is a JCU graduate who completed his Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2011. Since then, he has worked in a variety of different settings, including private practices and hospitals, with a brief stint working overseas in the UK. Alex has also completed his APA Sports Physio Level 2 course and has worked as a Team Physiotherapist for North Ward Rugby Union, Stockman's Rugby and Rebels Football Club over the years. He has a keen interest in soccer, rugby, cricket and playing the guitar.
Dr Shane Burgess
Physiotherapist/ Clinical Educator
Shane is a dedicated musculoskeletal physiotherapist specialising in cycling and triathlon. With a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement (Honours), a Masters in Physiotherapy, and a PhD in Exercise Science, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his practice. His research, published in peer-reviewed journals, has contributed valuable insights to the field. Since 2004, Shane has been a casual educator at the University of South Australia, teaching subjects such as Physiology, Training and Performance, Exercise Physiology, Sport and Skill Analysis, and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Despite spending most of his career as part of a large multidisciplinary team treating patients, Shane finds immense fulfillment in sharing his expertise and facilitating the learning of students. His passion for musculoskeletal physiotherapy is evident in his commitment to continuous learning, improved patient outcomes, and his desire to make meaningful contributions to the field.
Tegan Humphries
Physiotherapist / Clinical Educator
Tegan graduated from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2013. Tegan worked as a full time physiotherapist in a local musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice before coming on board as one of the Clinical Educators in the JCU Physiotherapy Clinic in 2021. Tegan has a strong interest in assisting the growth and development of undergraduate physiotherapy students whilst ensuring quality patient care.
